The Spring Clean
After a wet winter, Indian Sandstone patios often turn green with algae or develop 'black spots' (lichen). Here is how to restore them.
Pressure Washing: Proceed with Caution
Don't use the 'pencil jet' setting! It can blast out the mortar joints and leave 'zebra stripe' marks on softer stones like Rainbow Sandstone. Use a wide fan setting and keep the lance 30cm away.
Chemical Cleaning
For black lichen spots, pressure washing won't work. The roots are deep in the stone. You need a Sodium Hypochlorite based patio cleaner (bleach). Apply, scrub, leave for 30 minutes, and rinse. This kills the spores and restores the original buff/grey color of Kandla Grey.
