The Detail That Define the Design
When you buy a granite countertop, the stone is only 80% of the visual. The Edge Profile—the shape of the exposed edge—dictates the style (modern vs. traditional), the safety, and the cleaning ease. It is the handshake of the kitchen; it's what you touch every day.
1. Standard Edges (Usually Included in Price)
Eased Edge (Flat Polish):
The most popular choice for modern, contemporary kitchens. It is a square edge with the sharpness taken off (2mm radius) to prevent chipping.
Pros: Clean lines, maximizes the visual thickness of the slab, easiest to clean.
Cons: Can be sharp if you bump your hip against it.
Bevel (Chamfer):
A 45-degree slice off the top edge. It catches the light and adds a geometric frame to the stone. Common sizes are 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch bevels.
Pros: Elegant, deflects water spills.
Cons: The sharp corners can be prone to chipping if hit by a pot.
Half Bullnose (Demi-Bullnose):
Rounded on the top, flat on the bottom. It creates a soft, waterfall-like effect.
Pros: Very comfortable to lean against. Excellent for hiding spills.
2. Premium Edges (Upcharge)
Full Bullnose:
A complete semi-circle (180 degrees).
Pros: The safest edge for households with toddlers (no sharp corners). Extremely chip-resistant.
Cons: Water can wrap around the curve and drip onto the cabinet doors below. It can make the slab look thinner than it is.
Ogee:
An "S" shape curve. The hallmark of traditional, Victorian, or French Country kitchens.
Pros: Incredibly luxurious and decorative.
Cons: Expensive to fabricate. The deep crevices catch crumbs and are harder to wipe clean.
Mitered Edge (The Thick Look):
We cut the slab at 45 degrees and glue a 2-3 inch "apron" piece to the front. This makes a standard 3cm slab look like a massive 6cm or 10cm block.
Best For: Modern islands using Viscon White or large porcelain slabs.
Cost: High, due to precision cutting.
3. The Chiseled Edge (Rock Face)
The edge is broken with a hammer to look raw and rough.
Best For: Rustic outdoor kitchens or bar tops using Tan Brown.
Warning: Very rough on clothing.
Conclusion
For a modern look, stick to Eased or Mitered. For a classic home, choose Ogee. For a family home, Half Bullnose offers the best balance of safety and style.
