The Entryway Statement
Your front steps are the first thing guests see. Granite is the perfect material because it doesn't rot like wood or crumble like concrete. But outdoor stairs present a unique challenge: Rain.
The Texture Dilemma
A polished Absolute Black staircase looks incredibly sleek. But when wet, it becomes an ice rink. We have seen homeowners forced to cover their expensive granite stairs with rubber mats—a design tragedy.
The Hybrid Solution
The best design uses mixed finishes:
- The Tread (Step): Use a Flamed or Leathered finish. These rough textures provide grip (R11 slip rating) for shoes, even in a downpour.
- The Riser (Vertical face): Use a Polished finish. This reflects light, shows off the depth of the stone color, and is easy to wipe clean of scuff marks.
- The Nosing: Use a Half-Bullnose profile. The rounded edge is safer for shins if you trip and less prone to chipping than a sharp square edge.
This combination gives you the safety of a pavement with the glossy luxury of a high-end foyer.
