The Inch Difference

When ordering granite slabs, the first question is: 2cm or 3cm? (Approx 3/4" vs 1 1/4").

30mm (3cm) - The Gold Standard

Strength: It is structurally self-supporting. You can install it directly on top of cabinets.
Overhang: You can have a 10-inch breakfast bar overhang without steel supports.
Look: It looks substantial and luxurious. No laminated edge is needed.
Best For: Kitchen islands, heavy use areas.

20mm (2cm) - The Budget / European Choice

Strength: More fragile during transport. Usually requires a 5/8" plywood sub-top for support on cabinets.
Edge: To make it look thick, fabricators laminate a strip of stone to the front edge (creating a 40mm look). This adds labor cost.
Look: Sleeker, modern profile if left single-layer. Preferred for vertical cladding or backsplashes where weight is an issue.
Best For: Backsplashes, wall cladding, budget projects using Platinum White.
