The Spa Environment

We all love the look of a white marble bathroom. It screams "Luxury Spa." But a bathroom is a hostile environment for stone. It faces three threats: Acidic Toiletries, High Humidity, and Slip Hazards.

1. The Acid Test (Toiletries)

The Threat: Hairspray, nail polish remover (acetone), perfume, and drain cleaners are prevalent in bathrooms.
Marble: Marble is Calcium Carbonate. It dissolves in acid. One drop of drain cleaner or acidic face wash will etch a dull mark into Statuario Marble instantly.
Granite: Granite is resistant to almost all bathroom chemicals. Acetone won't hurt it. It is the safer choice for a kids' bathroom or a busy family bath.

2. The Humidity Factor

The Threat: Steam showers create 100% humidity.
Marble: Some marbles contain iron minerals that can rust in high humidity, turning yellow over time. Porous marbles can also absorb moisture and darken if not sealed perfectly.
Granite: Denser stones like Viscon White are impervious to steam. They won't warp or discolor.

3. The Slip Factor

The Threat: Wet floors.
Solution: Never use Polished stone on a shower floor. It is a death trap.
Best Choice: Honed Marble (mosaic tiles) or Leathered Granite. The grout lines in mosaics provide grip. A Leathered finish on Black Pearl granite provides excellent traction and feels great underfoot.

Design Compromise

If you must have the Marble look, use it on the Walls (vertical surfaces don't get walked on or hold spills). Use Granite or Porcelain on the vanity top and floor for durability. This gives you the aesthetic without the maintenance nightmare.
