Why Indian Granite is Harder Than Chinese Granite: A Geological Comparison

The Age of the Rock

Granite quality is largely determined by the geological age and the speed at which the magma cooled.
India (The Peninsular Shield): Indian granite comes from some of the oldest geological formations on Earth (Precambrian era, 3+ billion years old). The magma cooled incredibly slowly under immense pressure.
Result: Tighter crystalline structure, higher density, and lower water absorption.

The Chinese Granite Crisis

Many popular Chinese granites (like G603, G654) are geologically younger. They are more porous.
The Rust Issue: Many Chinese grey granites have high iron content that is unstable. Over time, exposure to moisture causes them to turn rusty yellow ("granite cancer").
The Dye Issue: To meet demand for black stone, some Chinese factories dye grey stone black. This fades in UV light.

The Indian Alternative

Stones like Platinum White (P White) act as direct replacements for Chinese G603.
Hardness: P White is significantly harder and takes a higher polish.
Stability: It does not rust or fade.
Price: With recent tariffs and quarry closures in China, Indian granite is now often cheaper or price-parity, but with superior longevity.

Buying Advice

For large commercial projects where the stone must last 50 years (airports, plazas), specify Indian Granite. The slightly higher density prevents water absorption and freeze-thaw cracking that plagues cheaper alternatives.
