The Palette of Rajasthan

Indian Sandstone is the gold standard for global landscaping. But the names can be confusing. Here is the definitive breakdown of the "Big 4" varieties quarried in Rajasthan.

1. Kandla Grey (The Modern Choice)

Geology: Hardest of the group. Almost quartzitic.
Color: Consistent mid-grey with occasional silver tones.
Weathering: Extremely robust. Does not change color much.
Best For: Modern, contemporary gardens. Pairs well with bi-fold doors and slate roofs.

2. Raj Green (The Heritage Classic)

Geology: Similar to English York Stone.
Color: A subtle blend of green, brown, grey, and khaki. No two slabs are alike.
Weathering: Softens with age. Grows moss/lichen beautifully if left unsealed for a rustic look.
Best For: Traditional cottage gardens, driveway paving (thick slabs).

3. Mint Fossil (The Brightener)

Geology: Softer, more porous. Contains distinct fern-like fossil markings (dendrites).
Color: Cream, beige, vanilla, with orange fossil spots.
Weathering: Warning: It is very porous. It absorbs algae quickly and can turn green if not sealed. It also exfoliates (peels) easier in frost if salt is used.
Best For: Dark, shady courtyards that need brightening up.

4. Modak (The Warmth)

Geology: Hard and dense.
Color: Intense reddish-brown, orange, and rose tones.
Best For: Mediterranean-style gardens, pool surrounds.

Summary

If you want bulletproof durability, choose Kandla Grey. If you want traditional charm, choose Raj Green. If you want light, choose Mint (but seal it well).
