The Sun Always Wins

Outdoor kitchens are the ultimate luxury, but UV radiation destroys synthetic materials. We explain why engineered stone fails outside.

The Mechanism

Quartz countertops are bound with polyester resin. UV light breaks the carbon bonds in the resin, causing "chalking" (surface whitening) and yellowing. Dark quartz fades to grey; white quartz turns amber.

The Survivor

Granite like Tan Brown is composed of mineral crystals (feldspar, quartz, mica) formed millions of years ago. Sunlight has zero chemical effect on it. Combined with its heat resistance (for hot BBQ grills), granite is the only logical choice for alfresco dining.
