The Orange Bloom

White granites like Colonial White or Kashmir White are beautiful but sensitive. They contain trace amounts of iron minerals (garnets/biotite). When these minerals are exposed to water and oxygen, they rust. This creates ugly orange blooms from deep inside the stone.

The Trigger

It usually happens near sinks. Water seeps into the unsealed edge of the cutout, soaks into the stone, and reacts with the iron. It can also happen if the stone is installed with the wrong adhesive (water-based) that soaks in from the bottom.

The Prevention Protocol

  1. Sealing: You MUST use a premium Silane-Siloxane impregnating sealer. This penetrates deep and coats the capillaries, preventing water entry. Apply it every year.
  2. Adhesive: Always install white granite with white thin-set or epoxy. Never use grey cement, which can wick moisture and cause discoloration.
  3. Edges: Ensure the sink cutout is sealed perfectly with silicone to prevent water ingress.
