Listening to the Stone
You don't need a lab coat to check quality. You just need a coin or a key.
The Method
Tap the surface of the slab gently with the metal object at various points.
High Pitch 'Ping': This indicates a dense, tight-grained stone like Absolute Black. It has no internal voids and high quartz content.
Dull 'Thud': This indicates the stone is softer, more porous, or potentially has a hairline fissure (crack) dampening the vibration. Be wary of slabs that 'thud'—they may absorb water faster or crack during fabrication.
