The Hot Pot Test

You just took a lasagna out of the oven (400°F). Can you put it on the counter?

Quartz (Engineered Stone)

NO. Quartz is 93% stone dust and 7% polyester resin. Plastic melts. If you place a hot cast iron skillet on Quartz, the resin will undergo "Thermal Shock." It can scorch (turn yellow/brown) or even crack due to rapid expansion. The damage is often permanent. You must use a trivet.

Granite (Natural Stone)

YES. Granite like Tan Brown was formed deep underground from cooling magma at temperatures exceeding 2000°F. A 400°F pan is nothing to it. It will not melt, scorch, or crack. It acts as a heat sink. This makes Granite the superior choice for keen cooks who need workspace speed.
